Agricultural transformation is vital to Africa’s development and resilience. The continent’s 250 million smallholder farmers represent nearly 30% of global agricultural employment yet contribute less than 3% of global agricultural GDP. Productivity remains up to 60% below global averages due to limited irrigation, low mechanization, and fertilizer use several times lower than in other regions. Meanwhile, Africa’s annual food import bill exceeds USD 100 billion, and climate change threatens to further erode yields. One key barrier lies in the absence of a shared, Africa-adapted definition of sustainable agriculture.With more than 35 global definitions and over 100 KPIs in circulation, existing frameworks often overlook African realities and exclude locally effective practices such as improved seeds, fertilizer micro-dosing, and integrated soil health management. This roundtable will bring forward credible, Africa-driven models, from national soil strategies to regenerative landscape pilots, to inform a more grounded and inclusive definition of sustainability. By exploring practical approaches and financing solutions, participants will work toward greater alignment among African and global actors and contribute to the forthcoming ATLAS White Paper on Sustainable Agriculture, positioning the African model as a global reference for resilient, equitable, and investable food systems.
