The world order we have known for the last 80 years is unravelling. Its architect, uneasy to be constrained by the norms, rules and institutions it has shaped, wishes to build a new one with different principles using its still advantageous position economically and strategically. This shift is partly a response to the spectacular rise of China and Asia in general. The end of a Eurocentric world order after centuries of Western domination is shaping the approach of the USA to Europe and fundamentally alters its priorities. And yet the contours of a new order are not fully present or articulated yet. A transactional, power-oriented world system where normative issues or concerns are at best sidelined is upon us. The existing void during this transition (that many call “multipolar”) enables emerging economic and geopolitical powers (commonly referred to as “middle powers”) a space for maneuvering and hedging between China and the USA.In this session, experts from around the globe will discuss the role these so-called middle powers may be able to play to influence and shape the new world dynamics as a balancing factor between the two superpowers and because their concerns will continue to have increasing relevance for the future. Whether such disparate powers can coordinate their strategies and form alliances around issues will be an important factor in the global distribution of power and in determining the extent of cooperation we could expect for crucial challenges such as climate change, the threat/opportunities of technological change, inequalities, or migration pressures.
