The rising ratio of national finances directed to debt servicing in many countries and the ensuing diminishing of resources dedicated to investments serving populations (in health, education etc.) is alarming. According to UNCTAD, 61 countries spent more than 10% of their revenue on their interest payments in 2024. The Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Sevilla saw the release of major reports, including the Jubilee Commission’s and the UNSG’s Expert Group on Debt’s, gathering sets of recommendations to address the debt crisis and to achieve global finance that serves “people and the planet”. This session will gather stakeholders to discuss some of these recommendations, determine priority areas of reform and select specific initiatives around which new international, multi-actor coalition could be forged ahead of G20 and the upcoming G7.
