(Session co-organized with Rockefeller Foundation).This invited only, closed door roundtable held during the Paris Peace Forum on October 30 will bring together stakeholders from government, philanthropy, and international organizations to mobilize support for countries as they expand their school meal programs globally. There is significant momentum at the national level to expand school meals to every child, which has been building over the last five years. Since 2020, global funding has doubled for school meal programs, from US$43B to US$84B, with 99 percent coming from national budgets. Additionally, the number of countries with national school meal policies has also doubled to 111 under the School Meals Coalition. The evidence bears out that these programs are a worthwhile investment, with every $1 contributing up to $30 in economic and social returns. Today, 466 million children receive a school meal every day, but estimates suggest that nearly 300 million still go without. Advancing school meals on an international scale, in addition to their direct benefits, contributes to a safe, stronger, and more prosperous world.The School Meals Coalition Summit in September in Fortaleza, Brazil, emphasized the role that international financial institutions and investors play in supporting school meal programs. These efforts, whether investments in education, nutrition, or human capital are critical in helping governments overcome fiscal constraints to scale sustainable school meal programs – especially those that are homegrown.
