As the United Nations nears its 80th anniversary, the multilateral system anchors under growing strain. Funding shortfalls and withdrawal of the US from UN specific agencies and commitments have jeopardized the capacity of the UN to deliver on the SDG agenda, global health security, and the core of its mandate - peace and security - and also exposed structural weaknesses and duplication of mandates. Secretary-General António Guterres launched the UN80 Initiative in March 2025, aiming at both operationalizing the reform package of the Pact for the Future adopted in 2024 Future and cutting expenses and realigning priorities. The challenge is significant: how can the UN adapt to a new era of geopolitical fragmentation, competing multipolar order and resource constraints, while preserving its legitimacy and capacity to respond to the increasing number of conflicts and the new global challenges such as climate change or the regulation of new technologies?, Can member states converge around a shared vision for reform?This session will bring together UN experts to explore the vision and methodology to implement reforms across agencies, including through the use of AI. They will also address how to navigate political resistance, overcome the Organization’s chronic financial challenges, and galvanize support for a renewed multilateralism.
