Maria Fernanda Espinosa is a distinguished diplomat, academic, and multilateral expert with over 30 years of experience in international negotiations and global governance. She was the fourth woman and first from Latin America and the Caribbean to serve as President of the UN General Assembly. In Ecuador, she served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defense, and as the country’s first woman Permanent Representative to the UN in New York.Her work spans peace and security, disarmament, climate change, biodiversity, human rights, Indigenous peoples’ rights, gender equality, and multilateral cooperation. Currently, she is President of Cities Alliance, Executive Director of Global Women Leaders for Change and Inclusion, and holds leadership roles with the International Crisis Group, Nizami Ganjavi International Center, Climate Governance Commission, and several UN advisory bodies.
