Balarabe Abbas Lawal, a Nigerian politician, farmer, and educator, serves as the Minister of Environment, appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in October 2023. Born in Kaduna State, Lawal lectured at the College of Advanced Studies, Zaria, from 1982 to 1989. With extensive public administration experience, he was Chief of Staff to Nasir El-Rufai, then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (2003–2007), and served as Secretary to the Kaduna State Government under Governors El-Rufai (2015–2023) and Uba Sani (May–October 2023). As SSG, he drove policies enhancing governance and public service delivery.Currently, Lawal is Vice Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, Chairman of the National Plastic Action Plan Steering Committee, and Chairman of the Governing Council for the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP). His expertise equips him to tackle Nigeria’s environmental challenges, including deforestation, pollution, and climate change. As Minister, Lawal promotes sustainable practices and policies, aligning with global environmental agreements to balance economic growth with resource conservation for future generations.
