Description
Monique Barbut held senior positions at the French Development Agency (AFD). She played a key role in the financial negotiations at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and actively contributed to the establishment of the Global Environment Facility (GEF). From 2003 to 2006, she led the Technology, Industry, and Economics Division of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) before becoming Director General and Chairperson of the GEF in June 2006. In 2013, she was appointed Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and, in 2016, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations. She joined the Board of Directors of WWF France from 2018 to 2023.
