Description

Rebecca MacKinnon is Special Advisor, Global Advocacy to the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit host of Wikipedia and other volunteer-run free knowledge projects. In her previous role as Vice President she established the Foundation’s Global Advocacy team, advocating for policies and laws that protect and advance free knowledge online. Author of Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle For Internet Freedom (2012), she co-founded the citizen media network Global Voices in 2004, and was founding director of Ranking Digital Rights (2013-2021). She has taught at the University of Hong Kong and the University of Pennsylvania, and held fellowships at Harvard, Princeton, and the University of California. Earlier, she was CNN’s Bureau Chief and correspondent in Beijing and Tokyo between 1998-2004.
