(Session co-organized with Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet). Energy poverty remains one of the most critical barriers to global development. SDG 7 commits the world to ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy services while significantly increasing the share of renewables in the global energy mix. Yet despite progress in electricity access during 2023 and 2024, the challenge remains acute: in some countries, less than half the population has electricity access. The International Energy Agency projects that by 2030, approximately 645 million people will still lack electricity—85% of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. The crisis extends beyond electricity: nearly 2 billion people continue to rely on polluting fuels and technologies for cooking, with devastating consequences for health, gender equity, and climate.Addressing energy poverty requires coordinated action at an unprecedented scale. The Global Energy Alliance (GEA) mobilizes action from governments, philanthropies, private sector partners, and local communities to drive transformative change. Through flagship initiatives like Mission 300—which aims to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030—and the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) Consortium—which aims to accelerate 5 GW of battery energy storage systems in developing economies by 2030, GEA is demonstrating what's possible when stakeholders align around ambitious, achievable goals.
