As the global order grows more fragmented, the concentration of power in the hands of a few is increasingly shaping international rules, partnerships, and economic leverage. While some actors retreat from multilateral institutions and use economic tools to assert dominance, others expand their global reach through strategic investment and influence-building, often at high political and financial cost to partner countries. For nations across Africa, Asia, and Europe, this evolving context raises urgent questions: How can states safeguard sovereignty and strategic autonomy amid rising external pressures? What are the risks of overdependence, whether in trade, security, or finance, and how can they be mitigated? And is there space for countries across regions to coordinate more closely in defending the principles of a fair and rules-based international system?This closed-door roundtable will provide a confidential space to unpack the pressures reshaping global politics and explore shared strategies to respond, individually and collectively, to a world increasingly defined by great power competition and systemic imbalance.
