In 2025, women still hold less than a third of parliamentary seats worldwide, and their presence in top political and ministerial roles remains even lower. Alarmingly, UN Women reports a decline in the share of women serving as heads of government—from 23.3 % in 2024 to 22.9 % in 2025—and only 27 countries are currently led by women. The rise of authoritarian regimes has also led to more conservative and anti-minority policies. These recent setbacks show how fragile women’s gains in the fight for equality can be in times of instability and rising crises. At the same time, new policies, such as feminist foreign policy strategies and expanded parity rules for local elections, point to concrete ways forward. Beyond strategies, quotas and representation targets, what systemic changes are needed to ensure women get access to decision-making processes, but also shape agendas and responses to today’s crises? This session will bring together inspiring figures to discuss what could be done to give women more agency and advance their political leadership in a context of instability and global disruption as well as the rise of right-wing parties, identifying actionable tools, policies, and partnerships that can sustain progress.
