As Washington turns inwards and retreats from international institutions and commitments and now favors bilateral deals over global frameworks, many wonder what role China, the second largest economy, may play to fill the void left on the world stage. Some analysts say that this withdrawal could accelerate Beijing's expanded influence in global governance and a multipolar order.For many states, the relations with China are multifaceted. The European Union describes China as a partner, but also as a competitor and a systemic rival. As the top trading partner to more than 120 countries, but also the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and a leader in renewable energy and electric vehicles, China’s role and responsibility cannot be ignored.This session will explore how to navigate the current tense and shifting geopolitical waters to ensure that countries can still advance common purposes for the global good and uphold multilateralism as well as a rules-based order over power politics. Panelists will also discuss the conditions and success factors to engage constructively in a fair and balanced way with China on global issues, such as climate change, protection of biodiversity, debt relief for developing countries or sustainable finance, and its impact on the future of global governance as a whole.
