Seventy-five years after the adoption of the Geneva Conventions, the principles of international humanitarian law (IHL) are more relevant than ever but also increasingly under threat. In an era marked by protracted and complex conflicts, urban warfare, the spread of disinformation, and disruptive technologies, the core rules designed to protect civilians, medical personnel, and prisoners of war are being routinely disregarded, including by states. The erosion of respect for IHL is not only exacerbating human suffering but also fueling cycles of impunity.On 27 September 2024, Brazil, China, France, Jordan, Kazakhstan, and South Africa—together with theICRC—launched a global initiative aimed at galvanizing political commitment to IHL. The initiative, launched by the six states from around the world and inviting all states to join, seeks to give a strong impulse to bring hope and fight lethargy, because disregard for international humanitarian law is not inevitable. It can – and must – be overcome.This session will explore how to move from principles to practice—by mobilizing new states to join the coalition and, strengthening national capacities. Stakeholders will discuss the responsibilities of states, the role of humanitarian actors, and the importance of coordinated diplomacy to ensure IHL remains a pillar of protection and human dignity in armed conflict.
