Description

(Session co-organized with the International Chamber of Commerce and Systemiq). As highlighted by the International Resource Panel’s Global Resources Outlook 2024, the sustainable management of materials is key to addressing the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. Governments and businesses have started to recognise the importance of managing materials sustainably to build more resilient economies and business models. However, decision-makers do not yet share a common understanding of where materials are extracted, traded, and re(used) – and what the environmental impacts from these activities are. While multiple databases exist, it remains difficult and/or costly to gain access to trustable data that is comparable across geographies, economic sectors, and materials. This closed-door roundtable marks the first in a series of expert consultations to inform the objectives and design of a dedicated programme for a Global Materials Data Hub. The focus of this exchange will be on the most impactful use cases of the Hub and its expected benefits.
